BC not ruling out pausing American liquor sales due to Trump tariffs

At a media event today, BC Premier David Eby shared what the province will do to minimize the potential impacts of Donald Trump’s tariffs, should they come to pass.

Last week, we learned that those tariffs could result in the loss of 124,000 jobs and $69 billion in economic activity.

Today, Eby was fired up and pushed back, outlining a few ways he hopes to combat those in collaboration with the Canadian federal government, including discouraging residents from buying American products.

One reporter asked Eby a question relating to what Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested doing in response to the tariffs, including pulling alcohol from LCBO shelves.

“For the government of British Columbia, everything is on the table,” Eby said.

Eby had a message for British Columbians, saying, “I hope when you’re at the grocery store, and you have a chance to buy a product right now, you’re looking carefully at the label to support Canadian jobs and support Canada in this critical time.”

Eby said that liquor stores are among the biggest purchasers of American alcohol products, adding that he believes Ontario liquor stores are the biggest.

“As a result, our decision not to purchase American alcohol definitely sends a message. It is one of the things that can be on the table to respond to these tariffs.”

He also said that if America won’t abide by trade agreements, “then neither are we.”

Some popular American alcohol brands include Jack Daniel’s, Bud Light, Budweiser, Coors Light, and Miller Lite.

Another potential impact of these tariffs is that BC residents could lose out on a tax rebate that was promised to them on the campaign trail of the last provincial election in 2024.

Are there any American products that you buy that you’d be worried about BC pausing the sale of to respond to these tariffs? Let us know in the comments.
