Squamish woman injured after bear attack

A Squamish woman is recovering after being attacked by a black bear while walking her dog on a trail last week.

The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) says the attack happened on Friday, May 10, on the Estuary Trails by Bailey Street around 8 p.m. when the woman’s dog ran off into the bush.

As she was trying to retrieve her dog, the service says the woman spotted two bear cubs and the mother bear suddenly charged at her.

The woman was bitten, and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Warning signage was placed in the area by BCCOS, and officers remained on the scene after the incident happened.

District of Squamish says the trail has been closed following the attack. It asks people to stay out of the area.

“The public is urged to take precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including travelling in groups, ensuring pets are leashed and carrying bear spray,” it said.
