Pitt Meadows road rage incident, police takedown caught on camera

An apparent case of road rage in Pitt Meadows led to the arrest of one person on Sunday.

The Ridge Meadows RCMP says officers received “several reports of a vehicle being operated recklessly” in the parking lot of Meadowtown Shopping Centre on June 9 around 5 p.m.

Video of the incident has been widely shared online. The footage shows a driver with a damaged pick-up truck driving erratically through the parking lot of centre along Lougheed Highway. People at the scene can be heard saying the vehicle hit another car in the lot, though that wasn’t in the video. In one instance, a detached bumper is seen on the ground.

Throughout the video, other vehicles, including a tow truck, are seen trying to box the driver in to prevent them from leaving. Bystanders are heard yelling “lock him in,” as the pick-up driver tries to evade obstacles.

Footage then shows the truck stopped on a roadway, with RCMP cruisers and officers right behind. In one frame, an officer is seen with their weapon drawn yelling at the driver to exit the truck. The driver is then seen being restrained by officers.

It’s unclear what prompted the incident.

“Police spoke with several concerned citizens and the driver was arrested. This is an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available,” said the Ridge Meadows RCMP in a statement to CityNews.

Police say no charges have been recommended at this time.
