Man taken into custody, sent to hospital after ‘disturbance at a residence’: Burnaby RCMP

Police say someone was taken into custody and sent to hospital during a report of “disturbance at a residence” in Burnaby Monday.

Burnaby RCMP says it happened around 6:15 p.m. near Humphreys Avenue near 17 Avenue.

Cpl. Michael Kalanj with Burnaby RCMP tells 1130 NewsRadio that a suspect was reportedly trying to break into one of the residences in the area.

He described the suspect as a 36-year-old man who was “yelling incoherently and was quite aggressive.”

“When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he became assaultive towards police,” Kalanj said.

Kalanj says a taser was used on the suspect, he was taken into custody and then taken to hospital.

The officer says at the same time several police officers also sustained minor injuries, with one officer having to be taken to hospital.

He says because of the area where the incident happened, Metro Vancouver Transit Police and the New Westminster Police Department were there to assist and make sure everyone was safe at the time.

Kalanj says there is no threat to the public at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
