Fundraiser for only survivor of tragic Chilliwack crash surpasses goal

It took only hours for a fundraising effort for a little boy who is the only survivor of a heartbreaking crash in Chilliwack to far surpass its goal.

Eight-year-old Tristan lost his mother and twin brother in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday on Highway 1 near No. 3 Road, and he remains in intensive care in Vancouver, according to a GoFundMe launched Wednesday afternoon by a family member.

The initial goal was $25,000, but an outpouring of support had pushed the total past the $60,000 mark by early Thursday morning.

“I’m reaching out for the family of my beautiful cousin, Layna (40) who was killed in a tragic accident August 6, 2024. She and her 8 year old son, Dominic, died instantly. Tristan, Dom’s twin brother, is currently in ICU in Vancouver,” shared Dirrae Young in the GoFundMe’s introduction.

“This tragedy was obviously unexpected, and I’m hoping anyone who sees this has it in their heart to donate to Layna’s family to help with funeral costs and aid in Tristan’s recovery.”

Words of support on the page include a comment from a woman who says her son lost a good friend in the crash.

“Today, our family learned about the tragedy that happened to our friends. Dominic is our son’s best friend. Layna was a very kind and bright person. We pray for Tristan’s health and express our deepest condolences to Layna and Dominic’s family.”

The online fundraiser says Layna’s dad, a retired paramedic, along with her mom, sister, and partner Cory are hoping and praying Tristan makes a full recovery, but it will take time and help.
