Camryn Rogers cries tears of joy after winning Olympic gold for Canada

For the second time at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Canada will secure a spot at the top of the podium in the hammer throw event.

Following Ethan Katzberg’s gold medal win in Sunday’s men’s event, Canadian track and field star Camryn Rogers delivered an outstanding performance in the circle on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Rogers set the pace early, with her first of six attempts reaching an impressive 74.11 meters.

However, China’s Jie Zhao quickly surpassed the Richmond native’s initial throw on her second attempt, recording a distance of 74.27 meters. Meanwhile, Rogers faltered as her second toss hit the netting.

Zhao’s lead was short-lived, as Rogers responded with a powerful throw of 74.47 meters. But she was soon pushed to second place when Annette Nneka Echikunwoke of Team USA achieved a distance of 75.48 meters.

Rogers came close to reclaiming the top spot in the fourth round, nearly matching her previous effort with a throw of 75.4 meters, just shy of first place.

On her fifth attempt, Rogers found her rhythm and launched a massive throw of 76.97 meters, securing the gold medal.

She was visibly emotional once the results were in, letting out tears of joy as she became the first North American woman to win a gold medal for hammer throw since Cuba’s Yipsi Moreno at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In the men’s competition, Katzberg captured Canada’s fifth gold medal of the 2024 Olympics with a spectacular opening throw of 84.12 meters in the final on Sunday.

The Nanaimo native’s throw was just 0.68 metres off the Olympic record of 84.80 metres set by Russian athlete Sergey Litvinov back in 1988.

Canada now has 18 medals (six gold) at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
