What’s up, Vancouver? I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and is ready to kickstart another week.
It’s Asymina here, and I’m back with another This Week in Vancouver newsletter dedicated to letting you know about what’s happening in the city over the next seven days.
From various Mother’s Day events to a popular night market returning to Vancouver, plenty is going on this week. To top it all off, Vancouver will see a lot of sunshine over the next few days and into the weekend. Welcome, patio season!

THINGS TO KNOW
đ ALBERTA IS CALLING… AGAIN
If you’ve ever wanted to relocate to Alberta, there’s now a monetary incentive for you to do it. Alberta has entered phase three of its Alberta is Calling campaign and it’s looking for certain workers from B.C., Ontario and Quebec to move there. The government will pay $5,000 to skilled tradespeople to come to Alberta. You can check out the campaign website to read more about it and whether you qualify.
â°ī¸ BC PROVINCIAL PARK VOTED A FAV AMONG LOCALS
A provincial park near Vancouver was voted as the best in B.C. by locals. We asked readers to tell us what the best provincial park in B.C. is and the majority chose Golden Ears Provincial Park. As one of B.C.’s largest parks, Golden Ears is a great spot for lots of fun activities, including hiking, camping, swimming and kayaking.
đī¸ FREE ADMISSION TO NATIONAL PARKS
Newcomers to Canada have access to a cool perk. New Canadians can explore the country’s iconic national parks, including many in British Columbia, for free! New Canadians get free admission to all places administered by Parks Canada across the country for one year, including national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas.
đ CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS
Keep your eyes peeled Vancouver! There are over 20 big-name celebs currently in the city working on various series and films. Some of the stars you might spot around town this month include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Emily Blunt, Lily Gladstone, Ella Purnell and Melanie Lynskey.
A recent celeb sighting happened at the Vancouver Aquarium when Jessica Biel met Jessica Seal. The actress shared photos of the meeting on her Instagram. She also shared snaps with her two sons, Phineas and Sila, as they went to cheer on Justin Timberlake at his Vancouver concert.
âī¸ WEATHER
Aside from some possible rain on Monday, Vancouver’s weather forecast for the week looks beautiful. The week will start at 13 C but those temps will climb throughout the week. By Saturday and Sunday, we’re looking at 22 C which is perfect patio and beach weather.
TRAVEL
đŠī¸ FLIGHTS FROM VANCOUVER TO BUTCHART GARDENS
Harbour Air announced a new route from downtown Vancouver to Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. The floatplane operator will offer tickets for a roundtrip flight and a two-hour garden tour starting June 12. The deal will cost $99 for passengers aged 12 years and older. The planes will land in a remote cove behind Butchart Gardens.

đĨ NEW RESTAURANT OPENING
A new Spanish restaurant has opened in Vancouver. Casa Molina, located at 2211 Manitoba Street, announced its soft opening on Instagram. The restaurant’s menu includes traditional Spanish octopus, slow-cooked beef cheeks, and a variety of paellas that are prepared using the traditional Valencian method. Reservations are recommended!
â VANCOUVER’S MICHELIN-STAR FOOD
If you’ve ever wanted to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant, you should check out any of the nine fine-dining Vancouver restaurants. In a new report, Vancouver ranked as one of the least expensive cities for fine dining compared to other Michelin restaurants worldwide. The average cost to dine at one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants is $155.

Now that patio season is finally here, you can enjoy those happy-hour drinks and dinner by sitting outside and enjoying the view that the city has to offer. Vancouver is filled with restaurants that offer beautiful waterfront views.

Mother’s Day is just a few days away and you may be planning some fun surprises for your mom.

VANCOUVER FESTIVALS & THINGS TO DO
đ SHIPYARDS NIGHT MARKET
A popular night market is back this week! The Shipyards Night Market opens on May 10 and runs until September 13. The free night market features food trucks, a beer garden, crafts, vendors and live bands on Friday nights.
đĄ RICHMOND NIGHT MARKET
The Richmond Night Market is another beloved event happening until October 14. The market is a hub for Asian culture and cuisine and draws thousands of visitors every year.
đĨ¨ FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL MOTHER’S DAY EDITION
Take your mom to a special edition food truck festival for Mother’s Day. You two can enjoy live music, shopping from local artisan vendors and great treats from 20 food trucks that will be on site. The festival runs on May 11 and 12.
đŋ CHEAP MOVIES AT CINEPLEX
If you’re looking for a fun mid-week activity, why not have a cheap movie night with some friends? Cineplex is hosting $3.99 movie nights every Friday this month. This week’s pick is Peter Rabbit 2 which will be showing on May 10.
SPORTS
đ Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The team will play their next game against the Edmonton Oilers. This will be the first time the two teams have met in the playoffs since 1992.
âž Vancouver Canadians
Baseball season is back in Vancouver! The Vancouver Canadians have been on the road in recent weeks but the team will be back at Nat Bailey Stadium on May 7. The team has 10 home games scheduled in May so make sure you get some tickets if you’re planning on going!
For their game on May 12 (aka Mother’s Day) the team has partnered with the BC Cancer Foundation and a portion of ticket sales will go towards the charity. Fans are encouraged to get to the stadium early to enjoy a White Spot Family Fun Sunday with travel mugs for the first 500 moms through the gates. Gates open at noon and the first pitch starts at 1:05 p.m.

đģ PNE FRIGHT NIGHTS
We’re not sure who is thinking about Halloween already, but if you love the spooky holiday you might be interested in a PNE casting call.
The PNE’s Fright Nights is hosting a casting call for live performer auditions from May 14 to 21. The casting call is open to performing artists of all kinds including, dance, musicians, ground circus acts, aerialists, singers, magicians and more!
Materials you’ll need to submit include headshots, a CV, an act description and photos. You can find more information on the PNE website. Anyone interested in “getting paid to make people scream” is encouraged to apply by May 10, which is the application deadline.
