This hidden Japanese bathhouse near Vancouver is the perfect romantic getaway

One of my hobbies is creating folders on Airbnb of local, dreamy cabins that I planned to visit with my now ex-boyfriends (RIP to all the deposits I’ll never get back). I like the low-key intimacy of an AirBnb. Sometimes, a hotel can feel impersonal? But then again, sometimes it’s nice to get that luxury turndown service instead of doing your own laundry. It’s a real “Sophie’s choice.”

So, this one is for all my kindred spirits looking for a romantic getaway with that extra something. Check out the inn that’s giving the best of both worlds. And it’s the perfect all-season retreat for couples seeking a sweet escape from Vancouver.

Meet Kitoki Inn

If you’re looking for a tranquil retreat from the city, Kitoki Inn on Bowen Island is a must-visit. This hidden gem offers a traditional Japanese onsen experience alongside the serene beauty of the Pacific Northwest. And let me tell you, it’s a match made in heaven.

Just a short ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Kitoki Inn feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Vancouver. The inn is surrounded by lush forests and stunning views, providing a peaceful and intimate setting for couples to get comfortable.

Full disclaimer: For all my singles out there, I’ve absolutely done a solo “romantic escape” in my day, so grab a book or grab a friend because this includes ya’ll.

Luxurious accommodations

From the plush linens to the water pressure, Kitoki Inn gets all the details right. Each room is designed with minimalist decor and natural materials, and the ambiance couldn’t be more perfect. To be honest, it reminds me of Edward Cullen’s house in Twilight. And, as someone who packed a sleeping bag to line up for Breaking Dawn Part 2, —there is no bigger compliment.

The best part? Kitoki Inn has limited capacity. There are only three cabins available at a time, making the entire experience that much more intimate.

But don’t get it twisted, Kitoki Inn is not your run-of-the-mill bed and breakfast. What takes this experience to the next level is what the Japanese call “onsen”.

The Onsen experience

The highlight of Kitoki Inn is its onsen, or traditional Japanese bathhouse. Guests can soak in mineral-rich waters in both indoor and outdoor hot spring baths while enjoying the tranquil sounds of nature.

It’s meditative. It’s rejuvenating. It’s like a spa day that never ends. There couldn’t be a more perfect way to unplug and unwind with your partner. And the best part is—it’s all included in your stay.

An all-inclusive stay

There’s nothing worse than having the world’s most relaxing neck massage, only to be hit with the bill an hour later. What Kitoki Inn gets right is that they understand rest and recovery require all your defences to shut down completely. This is why all fees are paid upfront. They think ahead, so you don’t have to. Rates start at $585 per night, with a minimum of a two-night stay.

Spa aside, there are many more low-key activities to enhance your stay. Guests can enjoy traditional tea ceremonies, guided forest walks, and, of course, the signature 90-minute bathhouse. The inn’s serene location also makes it ideal for exploring Bowen Island’s hiking trails, beaches, and pizza place by the ferry dock that everyone’s obsessed with.

What’s included:

  • Accommodation: Private cabins designed for comfort and intimacy.
  • Bathhouse: Bookable for 90-minute private sessions, twice a day per cabin.
  • Breakfast: A selection of fruit, yogurt, housemade granola, and assorted baked goods stocked in each cabin (vegan options available).
  • Entertainment Library: A variety of puzzles, games, and books to borrow during your stay.
  • Free Parking: On-site parking is available for all guests.
  • Free WiFi: Stay connected with complimentary WiFi throughout the inn

Booking Your Stay

If Kitokoi Inn sounds too good to be true, your spidey senses aren’t off (I can’t believe I just said “spidey senses” in earnest). There’s one catch: the waitlist puts the Arbutus Club to shame.

This year, there are only a handful of available dates left. Why? Well, because Kitoki Inn really is all it’s cracked up to be. It offers a luxury destination vacation at affordable prices (considering the all-inclusive spa services). With limited cabins available, the staff at Kitoki Inn can ensure every guest gets the intimate experience they are paying for.

But don’t be discouraged just yet. The good news is that the Kitoki team have a killer standby list, and it’s easy to sign up. Whenever there are cancellations, the team will send out email blasts with the dates up for grabs. So keep those push notifications on, because it’s first come, first served.

Verdict: Anniversary and proposal paradise

Whether you’re basking in the dappled sunlight or cuddled up watching the rain softly fall, Kitoki Inn is the all-season oasis you’ve been looking for to spend a little quality time with the one you love.

And on a more vain note! I know we all like to pretend we don’t watch our own Instagram stories 100 times a day, but let’s get real, we probably do? If you’re not on social media—great. This is the place to be. But if you are on social media—guess what? It’s also the place to be. Kitoki Inn is just super photogenic. All Face Card and no FaceTune, if you catch my drift.

That’s why I’ve decided this is where I want everyone to propose to their girlfriend (or boyfriend).
