7 free things to do in Vancouver this weekend, April 19 to 21

The weekend is almost here and it’s time to start making plans.

There are many exciting things to do in Vancouver this weekend, and the best part is that many of them are free.

From a massive parade to a dragon boat festival and a yoga workshop, here are seven free events happening in Vancouver this weekend.

Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade

Price: Free

Address: The parade starts at the Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar Temple located at 12885 85th Ave. in Surrey

When: April 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why You Need To Go: More than 500,000 people are expected to attend the annual Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade, which organizers say is the largest Vaisakhi Parade in the world.

The parade features numerous floats, community groups, live music, dancers and performers.

On Saturday, the parade will begin at the Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar Temple and travel along 124th Street, turn left onto 75th Avenue, continue on 76th Avenue, onto 128th Street, and then back to the temple.

Organizers say there will be no parking at the event and advise people walk to the festival area.

Dragon Boat Festival

Address: Rocky Point Park, Port Moody

When: April 20, 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Why You Need To Go: The fifth annual Inlet Spring Regatta will feature dragon boaters from around B.C. and Washington.

It marks the first dragon boat event of the season in Canada and will have live music, a DJ, food trucks, vendors, and a beer garden.

“We’re proud to announce that we have 44 teams geared up and ready to race! Additionally, this year marks a special milestone as we welcome teams from the USA for the first time,” Robbin Whachell, President of the Nothin’ Dragon Paddling Society, said in a press release.

When: April 19, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why You Need To Go: Celebrate Earth Day by joining Altea Active’s beach cleanup at Kitsilano Beach on Sunday.

Once you get to Kitsilano Beach, just look for a flag that will be set up so you can find the team. Organizers will have supplies for the cleanup as well as warm drinks and even surprise giveaways.

The beach cleanup will be followed by a cold plunge at 2 p.m.

Why You Need To Go: Made in the 604 is a pop-up market that supports local artists, crafters, makers and small businesses.

The markets will be popping up in various locations around the Lower Mainland this spring and summer.

The first event is happening at Heritage Hall in Vancouver on Sunday. You can even bring your furry friend along with you as the event is pet-friendly.
