The wild weather in Vancouver has led to road closures and power outages on Monday, and it’s not done yet. According to meteorologists at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Monday’s surprise windstorm will be going strong for a few more hours.
Calling it a “vigorous frontal system,” residents can expect to feel 100 km winds gusting from the northwest until it moves through the region, with potential lightning and heavy rain showers, combined with sunny breaks, create a whiplash of a weather day for those on the South Coast.
“Winds will diminish this evening as the frontal system moves inland and weakens,” the weather service said in its alert, which was updated on Monday around 11 am. Monday night is expected to be a cool 4°C with some clouds.
As of noon Monday, few impacts have been reported at the Vancouver International Airport, and while the morning commute was described as “chaos” by some, many incidents have since been cleared.
However, police investigations are ongoing in the Lower Mainland regarding three pedestrian collisions, which are expected to take some time.
Richmond RCMP is asking drivers to avoid the area of No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway due to an incident.
“Richmond RCMP is actively investigating a collision involving a pedestrian. Road closures are in affect for all directions at No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway. Please avoid the area. As this investigation is actively unfolding, no further information will be provided at this time,” it said Monday morning.
BC Hydro is reporting outages in several areas, with 83,000 customers from Vancouver Island east to Abbotsford without power as of noon.
Tuesday is predicted to be a better day weather-wise, with a mix of sun and clouds and 9°C.
