There could soon be another non-stop flight service that directly links Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with a new destination in Southeast Asia.
Last week, Vietnam Airlines shared on their social media that they are exploring a significant global expansion that rolls out brand new routes.
The airline specifically named potential new routes to Vancouver, as well as Seattle, Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Dubai, Bangalore, Dhaka, and Darwin, Australia. This would grow the Vietnam flag carrier’s network, which currently has 91 routes serving 54 destinations, including 57 international routes and 34 domestic routes.
Currently, YVR does not have any direct, non-stop service to Vietnam.
Moreover, there are currently no direct, non-stop services between Vietnam and Canada by any carrier. In fact, Vietnam Airlines’ first and only direct, non-stop service to the United States launched relatively recently in November 2021, flying between Ho Chi Minh City and San Francisco.
But other carriers, namely Air Canada, have recently been introducing new direct, non-stop services between YVR and previously unserved or under-served destinations in Southeast Asia.
Since 2023, Air Canada has operated a new YVR service reaching Bangkok, Thailand, on a seasonal basis only. The following year, in 2024, Canada’s flag carrier launched a new year-round service to Singapore, replacing a previous recent service operated by Singapore Airlines.
In April 2025, Air Canada will also launch a new year-round service linking YVR with Manila, Philippines.
Vietnam Airlines has hubs in both of Vietnam’s most populous cities, including Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi and Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City.
