Vancouver continues to be attractive to people outside of BC. It just made the list of the best cities in the world with a high quality of life.
The Mercer-conducted survey includes five Canadian cities in the top 25, with Vancouver being the only North American destination to crack the top 10.
“Canada is often considered one of the top locations from a quality living perspective due in part to its political and economic stability and social and cultural environment, and several major Canadian cities are represented in the top quarter of our 2024 rankings,” said Vince Cordova, a Mercer partner for mobility advisory services in North America, in a statement.
According to Mercer’s methodology, quality of living is calculated based on the practicalities of daily life for international assignees and their families in cities.
Vancouver landed seventh place overall due to its “unique blend of temperate climate, recreation options, and cosmopolitan living.”
Toronto came in at 13, Ottawa and Montreal tied for 20, and Calgary slotted in at 25. They all rank higher than the top US city, Boston, at number 32.
“The Canadian cities on the rankings each have their own unique culture and lifestyle, from Vancouver’s access to nature and recreation opportunities, Toronto’s incredible diversity, Ottawa’s proximity to Parliament, Montreal’s historic downtown, and Calgary’s strong job market,” added Cordova.
“Canada continues to be a leading destination for international assignees who can access the range of benefits the country and cities have to offer.”
Vancouver tied with Frankfurt, Germany, for seventh in this year’s ranking, which is one place higher than it placed in Mercer’s Quality of Living City in 2023.
