Vancouver’s newest omakase experience opens in space of a former pie shop

There’s no denying that Vancouver is home to some excellent omakase spots, and now another one is joining the fray.

Niwa is a new restaurant brought to us by the same team behind Ugly Dumpling, which closed its doors in 2021.

Inside, Niwa consists of three seating areas: the bar, booths, and dining room.

“We look at Niwa as three subtly different dining experiences. With an intimate restaurant of 32 seats, we are currently welcoming reservations of one to five guests,” shared the restaurant on its website.

Regarding food, Niwa says to leave it up to them.

“Entrust Chef Darren Gee and the service team to guide you through meticulously crafted dishes, showcasing local, seasonal ingredients, fine butchery with his signature style.”

Customers can expect five courses highlighting both freshness and flavour balance.

However, there is an a la carte menu available online to give you an idea of some of the tasty items you’ll be able to enjoy, including items like a pork and cabbage headcheese with chili oil kombi and cilantro, duck liver pate with winter crudites, and fresh hand-cut buckwheat pasta with BC uni, butter, and kabocha.

Located at 1875 Powell Street, Niwa is found at the former location of The Pie Shoppe, which closed in September 2024.

Currently, Niwa is open for dinner only, Monday to Friday, from 5:30 pm, and closed on Saturday and Sunday.
