Vancouver Whitecaps shoot their shot with Ryan Reynolds hoping he’ll buy the team

The Vancouver Whitecaps are not holding back when it comes to attracting new ownership.

The club tagged actor Ryan Reynolds, whom many locals would call the dream owner, on social media today to try to get his attention.

Reynolds recently was named a recipient of the Order of Canada, one of the most prestigious honours offered in the country. He took to X to post a thank you message, which the Whitecaps hijacked for their own agenda.

“Congrats [Ryan Reynolds]! We have an idea where you can put your powers for good,” wrote the team cheekily with a winking emoji.

With few local options seemingly willing to buy the team, there is a risk that an American group will swoop in and attempt to relocate the Whitecaps. The best way to avoid that is to find a local owner with an attachment to the city.

Reynolds is a native Vancouverite and already owns a professional soccer team. He bought Welsh side Wrexham A.F.C back in 2020 with friend Rob McElhenney. They’ve done a lot of good work since the purchase, including producing the popular TV series Welcome to Wrexham and helping the team climb upward through the divisions.

The latest valuations for the Whitecaps show that the team is worth around $470 million. That’s well above the reported $2.5 million Reynolds paid for Wrexham. Thus, if Reynolds is involved with the new Whitecaps ownership group, he’ll likely need some friends with deep pockets to help foot the bill.

Whitecaps fans will keep hoping that Reynolds manages to get involved with new ownership and the club is doing their part by shooting their shot. All that remains to be seen is how this situation plays out.
