Vancouver restaurant confirms “the rumours are true” about its closure and debt

The restaurant industry in Vancouver can’t seem to catch a break, and unfortunately, we received confirmation that another eatery has closed its doors for good.

Gastronomy confirmed to Dished that the “rumours are true,” and it closed on December 19.

“We faced a lot of the same difficulties that a lot of other great restaurants in Vancouver face if they are not backed by big restaurant groups,” shared a representative of Gastronomy.

For those unfamiliar, Gastronomy was a 39-seat Italian restaurant serving food that was described as “modern-day Vancouver with Italian influence.” It opened its doors in January 2023.

As for the reason for the closure, Gastronomy said that “rent in Vancouver is astronomical and labour cost for an experienced crew is quite hefty as well.

“Pair that with our declining economy and people having less money every day to spend on luxuries such as going out to dinner with friends and family and unfortunately you end up where us and a lot of our peers ended up,” added the restaurant.

Gastronomy isn’t the only one that has cited rent and other increased costs as the reason for its closure. Liberte Cafe and Restaurant also shared that it would be closing after the landlord decided to “exorbitantly” increase its rent.
