Trudeau posts video about Canada “for Americans” after Trump continues 51st state threats

US President-elect Donald Trump won’t stop talking about Canada and it seems like Justin Trudeau has finally issued an indirect response.

On Thursday, Trudeau posted a video on his X account with the caption, “Some information about Canada for Americans.”

Journalist Tom Brokaw narrates the video, which aired on NBC before the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, BC.

Throughout the five-minute clip, the American journalist explains how Canada and the US have fostered a close relationship and friendship over the years.

Not only do the two countries share the largest international border in the world, but they also have a “joint stewardship of a treasure of natural riches,” and they both serve as “immigrant nations,” says Brokaw.

He also notes that both countries have “the largest trading relationship in the world” and highlights their close economic and diplomatic ties.

The video concludes with a short snippet of former US President John F. Kennedy’s speaking in Parliament in 1961.

“Geography has made us neighbours, history has made us friends, economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies,” stated Kennedy.

The timing of the prime minister’s post comes after repeated taunts from Trump, referring to Canada as the “51st state” and Trudeau as “governor” following his threats to implement a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods coming into the US if border security and drug issues are not addressed.

In Trump’s latest post, which he published on Truth Social on December 25, he took aim at Canada again after wishing a “Merry Christmas to all.”

“Also, to Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada, whose Citizens’ Taxes are far too high, but if Canada was to become our 51st State, their Taxes would be cut by more than 60%, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other Country anywhere in the World,” wrote Trump.

In another Christmas Day post, Trump suggested Wayne Gretzky, the NHL’s all-time leading scorer, should lead Canada instead of Trudeau.

While Trudeau didn’t directly call out Trump on X, many felt there was a deeper meaning to posting the video.

“I wish every Canadian and American would take the time to watch this video clip,” stated former Ottawa mayor Jim Watson.

“A reminder to ourselves and our American friends of how we have traditionally shown respect for one another and had each [other’s] back.”

“This tweet is pretty emblematic of the political dead end we’re in,” wrote another X user.

“This is a primer for Trump who it appears doesn’t seem to understand the relationship formed over hundreds of years,” said one X user.

“Canadians have a big heart. Those who want to ruin this relationship are not doing anyone any favours,” added another.

Last week, the federal government laid out a new border security plan in response to Trump’s proposed tariffs.

The new plan is composed of five pillars that will detect and address fentanyl, add significant new tools for law enforcement, improve operation coordination and information sharing, and minimize border volumes to the US. It is backed by a $1.3 billion investment that was announced in the latest fall fiscal update.
