“Treacherous conditions”: Snow leads to shutdowns on busy BC highway

Snow fell on the Lower Mainland this weekend for the first time all winter, leading to major delays on a portion of a busy BC highway to start off the workweek.

According to the BC Highway Patrol, icy and “treacherous conditions” are leading to intermittent shutdowns on Highway 1 between Langley and the Fraser Valley in both directions. Earlier today, DriveBC informed drivers that the snow was impacting conditions on Highway 1, telling drivers to “expect lengthy delays.”

Some folks have also shared their experiences travelling on Highway 1 on social media.

“Slow and spinning out semis on highway one just past 232, and backed up into Langley,” said a Reddit user, warning others who might be headed out that way.

While this might be a far cry from the nightmarish 11-hour commute back in 2022, there have still been some delays impacting road users.

Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol is warning drivers to avoid Highway 1 altogether.

“Drivers should not use Highway #1 unless necessary; they leave extra travel time, and their vehicles are fully prepared for winter conditions.”

The BC Highway Patrol says that “motorists are encouraged to check DriveBC for the most up-to-date road conditions.” The most recent update from DriveBC, which was just before 11 am, states that snow ploughs are attempting to make it into problem areas on BC Highway 1.

Other parts of Metro Vancouver have also been impacted, and a lane was temporarily closed on the Alex Fraser Bridge.

Vancouver residents are reporting that the main roads seem to be clear, but some sidewalks and side streets are icy and could pose a danger.
