Strathcona multi-home blaze took 55 firefighters to bring it under control

Two peDozens of firefighters responded to Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood Monday night for a 100-foot tall  fire that involved three homes.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services said it took 55 firefighters to bring the blaze under control. It was difficult partly because of a gas line that rupture behind one of the homes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“Firefighters on scene quickly got water on the fire, protected adjacent structures, and conducted search efforts where able,” VFRS said in a news release Tuesday.

The fire broke out in the 1000 block of East Pender Street, with photos and video from the scene showing the flames rising high above homes and burning trees.

BC Emergency Health Services said three ambulances and a supervisor responded to the scene just before 8 pm where one person was assessed and treated. The patient didn’t require transport to hospital.

A second person was also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, VFRS said.

A total of 11 people were displaced from the affected buildings and now have to find alternate accommodation.

“Due to the rapid growth of fires and dangers of toxic products of combustion, we are urgently reminding residents to always have a working smoke alarm outside each sleeping area and on each level where they reside,” VFRS said.
