Metro Vancouver residents saw snow in Vancouver over the last few days for the first time this winter, but when will it stop, and might there be more?
While the snowfall we’ve seen might pale compared to snowmageddons of past winters, it has impacted traffic and transit operations, including flights at YVR.
So, when is it going to stop? Will we see more snow later this month? And how are residents reacting?
According to the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecast, there’s a chance of flurries for the rest of the day and all of Wednesday.
However, it’s not necessarily that simple. We connected with ECCC meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau, who shared some intriguing information about how the rest of the month may unfold.
Charbonneau said we will have one of the two necessary ingredients for more snow for the next week or two, not ruling out the chance for more flurries. That ingredient is freezing temperatures. Over the next few days, the odds of heavy flurries aren’t likely, according to signals that ECCC is seeing. But, as long-time Vancouver residents know, things can change here in the blink of an eye regarding the weather.
The ingredient that is lacking for more snow is moisture.
“Whenever we see cold air in place, and then if you get something coming off the water, for example, a weak system, even coming down the coast, there is the chance of snow,” Charbonneau said.
If you thought seeing snow this late in the winter was weird, according to data Charbonneau pulled up, this has been relatively normal since at least the early 90s. Temperatures, however, are below seasonal for this time of year.
“As we look out to the latter part of the week and going into next week, there is a chance we might see snowfall again.”
Charbonneau cautions anyone from panicking as weather signals don’t suggest that there will be heavy snow if we get more, but that remains to be seen.
How residents have been coping
If social media is any indication, Metro Vancouver residents have been pretty kind to one another in recent days.
Many residents have logged onto Reddit to inform other drivers about hazardous road conditions, particularly on BC highways. Yesterday, parts of BC Highway 1 were a disaster, and the situation is not improving.

While most Vancouverites have been kind to one another, others have been slightly irked.
One Redditor said, “If you don’t have the proper tires, STAY HOME!”
Some drivers haven’t been taking the safest precautions before heading out.

Are you hoping for more, or are you ready for this snow to be gone?
