“Slower than normal”: Weather impacting Vancouver transit services

Slippery platforms, slower trains, and delayed buses are just a few of the realities Vancouver transit riders are experiencing as snow and icy weather impact TransLink service on Monday.

We’ve heard from some riders that trains are stopping at or between stations for longer than usual, and TransLink has revealed some of the impact the weather has been having on service.

The most recent update from TransLink on social media was informing riders that Expo and Millennium Line service was operating slower than normal due to inclement weather.

Canada Line is unaffected so far.

Extra SkyTrain attendants are also positioned at stations to help alleviate some of the stress caused by the weather on the system.

“SkyTrain Attendants are positioned at the front of trains to prevent emergency braking caused by snow and freezing temperatures, resulting in lower-than-usual frequencies,” TransLink says.

So far, while bus service may be delayed in some areas, there hasn’t been a reduction in service.

TransLink states it is “coordinating with municipalities to ensure priority roads are cleared.”

As of 12:30 pm, there are over 120 alerts regarding TransLink bus service, but most are related to construction, not winter weather.

If you’re commuting via transit today, stay tuned to TransLink’s social media and website for the latest alerts and travel updates.

TransLink senior media advisor Daniel Mountain told Daily Hive that things were running smoothly considering the weather.

“In some instances, there were some impacts to service with re-routes at higher elevations and lower than normal frequencies due to the weather,” Mountain said.

He added, “We thank customers for their patience, encourage them to build extra time in their commute, and to check their route before they go out as crews continue to work hard around the clock to keep customers moving throughout Metro Vancouver.”
