Sherwood thanks Vancouver Canucks fans after they chant his name

Vancouver Canucks fans love Kiefer Sherwood.

That much was obvious as Rogers Arena rocked with chants of “Kie-fer Sher-wood” on Monday night while the Canucks finished a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Sherwood scored all three Canucks goals, netting a natural hat trick in what has been a magnificent start to the season. He got his first goal of the night at even strength, his second shorthanded, and his last into an empty net.

“That’s a pretty special honour, I was trying to take it in,” Sherwood told reporters after the game. “I really appreciate the fan support, obviously their passion is something Vancouver is known for. That was pretty cool and I’ll definitely remember it.”

“We’re humble guys… I was just trying to take it in, have the whole arena [chanting your name], that’s something you dream of as a kid. Those are the moments you work for and just manifest and visualize. I’m really thankful and grateful for them.”

Sherwood has been one of the most pleasant surprises for the Canucks this season. The undrafted journeyman has 11 goals through the first 30 games, which is already a new career high. Needless to say, his two-year deal worth $1.5 million per season is looking like a steal right now.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunity that the staff and management have given me. I just try to put my work boots on each and every night. I think when you do that sometimes good things happen.”

The 29-year-old has become a fan favourite not just because of his goal scoring. He also plays fast and leads the league in hits.

His teammates seem to like him too.

“It’s special, especially for him to hear it for the first time and to hear the fans get behind the players. I’m really happy for him to experience that,” said J.T. Miller.

“The physical aspect everybody has talked about, but he’s got a lot more skill than people probably think, can shoot the puck really hard.”

“He’s a good dude, we love having him around,” said Thatcher Demko. “He’s a guy that has a positive attitude every day. Chatting guys up in the morning, maybe you’re a little groggy before practice or whatever but he’s bringing everybody’s energy up.”

“He’s a good dude, we love having him around. Everyone’s just pumped for him tonight, he played so well.”

If Sherwood can keep up this level of play, hearing his name chanted at Rogers Arena will become a regular event.
