After 15 years of providing Burnaby with a home for comic book lovers and toy collectors, Metropolis Comics has announced that it will be closing its physical store.
The popular Kingsway comic shop across from Metrotown posted the “sad news” on social media, explaining that the difficult decision came after they learned their landlord had plans to rent out its entire building, which meant they had to move.
“We began a process of looking at possible spots to move the shop but have come to the conclusion that we will be closing our physical store instead,” said owner Johnny Botsch on Facebook.
“Every place that was available had its challenges. Maybe the rent was okay but the size was too small to keep the gaming tables. Or the space required a renovation too extensive to afford.
“Moving would only make sense if we thought we could make it work and for innumerable reasons, it doesn’t look that way. Not to mention the place the economy is and where it’s likely to keep going.”
Botsch added that the store will hold a closing-out sale, though an exact closing date has not been announced yet.
Metropolis Comics and Toys originally opened inside Metropolis at Metrotown in 2009 before moving to its current location in Unit 200 at 4735 Kingsway.
The store became a favourite place to find the latest figures, anime collectibles, graphic novels and comics. It also hosted regular community events like Free Comic Book Days, art exhibitions, and Pokemon gaming nights.
Botsch added that he is thankful to Metropolis Comics’ landlord for all his help in finding the shop a new home and that he will still be available to serve the community.
“I’m sorry people can’t come into the store anymore, but I’m not going anywhere either. If you want to get reading a couple of series, feel free to message me about a subscription. I will also be able to spend more time on my YouTube content and I will be at local conventions like the PNE show coming up in April.”
Fans on Facebook thanked Botsch for all of the memories over the years.
“So many of the most important relationships in my life came to me via MCT,” said Michael J. Cohen. “Sad to see it closing its physical doors, but I’m glad you’re able to adapt to this crazy world and continue serving this community you’ve built over the last 15 years.”
“I am so sorry, that’s horrible luck,” added Caitlin Kitty Ryan. “I remember falling in love with the store when you were in Metrotown. And onward. Will cherish all the memories I’ve had there. Best of luck in the future.”
Botsch thanked the community for their support.
“I started a family while having this shop and over 15 years customers have passed away, graduated from high school, got married, and changed jobs. It’s a big chunk of time.
“This store has brought me multiple friends that are lifelong appointments. People that are priceless to me. I don’t take that for granted in any way.”
