A new holiday parade is lighting up the streets of Port Coquitlam this weekend, but drivers and commuters are being warned of road closures when Santa comes to town.
The first Parade of Lights is on Saturday, December 14 throughout downtown Port Coquitlam, with festive floats, illuminated vehicles, and a special appearance by the jolly old elf.
According to Mayor Brad West, the inaugural all-ages event is a chance for the community to come together.
“As the first event of its kind in the Tri-Cities, it offers a unique opportunity for families and friends to come together, celebrate the Christmas season, and create lasting memories in our vibrant downtown,” Mayor West said in a release. “This is a special time of year and this new event will be a big hit with the kids as we prepare for Santa’s arrival.”
The magical procession begins at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC). It will continue along Kelly Avenue, turn north on Shaughnessy Street, and head east on McAllister Avenue before turning south along Mary Hill Road back to Kelly Avenue.
Numerous road closures will be in effect on Saturday from 4:45 pm to 7 pm:
- Shaughnessy Street from Wilson Avenue to Elgin Avenue
- Leigh Square Place east of Shaughnessy Street
- Donald Street from Wilson Avenue to McAllister Avenue
- Whyte Avenue at Shaughnessy Street
- McAllister Avenue east of Shaughnessy Street to Mary Hill Road
- McAllister Avenue west of Shaughnessy Street to southbound alleyway
Detours will be set up around the parade route, and the City of Port Coquitlam encourages paradegoers to take transit, walk or cycle to the holiday event.
The fun continues after the event, as attendees are invited to enjoy public skating at the PCCC from 6 to 7 pm, with hot chocolate and tasty treats, holiday-themed arts and crafts, and more.
