Kayaker goes missing off West Vancouver during windstorm

West Vancouver police are asking for help searching for a kayaker who went missing as a bomb cyclone stirred up high wind along BC’s South Coast.

The man left Batchelor Bay, a small beach in a residential area of West Vancouver, around 12:40 pm on November 19. It was supposed to be a short paddle where he would be back by 2:30 pm.

But he didn’t return as scheduled and was reported missing just after 4 pm.

The man was last seen rounding Whyte Islet and heading north toward Whytecliff Park.

Police describe the missing man as 36 years old, 5’10″, and 170 pounds. “[He] has dark brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black rain jacket, black track pants, and black flip-flops, and was in a white collapsable kayak,” police continued.

Anyone who sees him or has information is asked to contact police at 604-925-7300.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said the intense low-pressure system yesterday brought strong winds. Hundreds of thousands of customers lost electricity and the winds downed trees and led to ferry cancellations.

The Gulf Islands and Howe Sound saw wind speeds between 78 and 96 kilometres per hour.

One person died south of the border in Lynwood, Washington, when a tree fell and hit her. The Vancouver Police Department told Daily Hive it didn’t deal with any deaths or serious injuries because of the storm.
