The 2024 Globe and Mail Canada’s Most Liveable Cities list released this week has sparked plenty of debate online, and North Vancouver residents are speaking out to support their city’s top ranking.
Over 400 communities across Canada with a population higher than 10,000 were evaluated and ranked based on 50 variables in 10 categories.
The title went to North Vancouver which ranked highly for its access to nature, strong community, and amenities. And the city’s mayor posted a congratulatory message to its residents on the recognition.
Being recognized as Canada’s most livable city by the @GlobeandMail is a testament to the people who make the @CityofNorthVan what it is—vibrant, connected, and resilient. This honour highlights our success in creating a city where life is truly about quality. pic.twitter.com/2JSx9K0rpu

“As we look to the future, I am focused on building upon our successes so we remain a place where everyone feels they belong, where our greenspaces are preserved, and where our public spaces inspire connection and joy,” Mayor Buchanan added. “Together, we’ll continue to build a city that puts people at its heart and sets a standard for livability across the country.”
Several residents joined the Mayor on celebrating North Vancouver’s ranking as the Most Liveable city in Canada.
“I’ve waited to live in North Van since I was a kid and I was so happy I finally got to move here 10 years ago,” commented a user on Reddit. “It’s so beautiful and I never want to leave.”
That’s wonderful! It is a beautiful city that we live and I love ❤️ living here!

Having lived there for 9 years in the 80’s, I second this! Congratulations to North Van!

The Globe and Mail noted that categories it identified as more important for people, such as housing and health care, were given more weighted significance than others.
The 10 categories that cities were rated on included economy, housing, demographics, health care, safety, education, community, amenities, transportation, and climate.
Not every local agreed with North Vancouver’s placement at the top of the list, many for the same reason.
“No longer affordable for working people who were born and raised here,” said a Redditor.
Dia a Boomer write this? It’s too expensive to be livable.
