How Taylor Swift will affect getting to Canucks games this weekend

It’s not often the Vancouver Canucks are clearly the second-biggest show in town, but that’s most certainly the case this weekend. The Canucks have games at Rogers Arena on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, while Taylor Swift performs across the street to sold-out crowds at BC Place.

The start time (7 pm) for the hockey game and concert on Friday are identical. There’s also a Cirque du Soleil show nearby at Concord Pacific Place beginning at 7:30 pm. That means more than 75,000 spectators will be heading into the area, and that doesn’t even include tailgating Swifties who may show up without tickets.

Add in regular Vancouver Friday night traffic, and, needless to say, it’s going to be a little chaotic downtown.

Parking will be a challenge, with one company taking advantage by price-gauging to the tune of $150. Other parking companies have vowed not to follow suit though.

“Please take public transit, as parking in the area will be extremely limited,” the Canucks said. “Give yourself extra time to arrive and navigate the crowds in downtown Vancouver. We look forward to welcoming you to Rogers Arena for an exciting weekend of Canucks action.”

Even Sunday’s game, which begins seven hours before Swift’s final concert of the Eras Tour, will be affected due to road closures.

Road closures include Pacific Boulevard (between the Cambie Bridge off-ramp and Pat Quinn Way), Beatty Street (between Smithe and West Georgia), and Robson Street (between Cambie and Beatty) will be closed beginning at noon on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
