Holiday winners: Two Canadian lottery players just split a $5 million prize

Christmas just got merrier for two Canadian lottery players who became multimillionaires overnight.

The Lotto 6/49 draw took place on Saturday, December 21, and the jackpot was a massive $50 million. Although no one will be taking home the Gold Prize, someone in Ontario just woke up $1 million richer after matching the White Ball winning number 48394079-01.

Saturday’s draw was a very lucky one for several Canadians.

Two people managed to match the Lotto 6/49 Classic winning numbers 06, 09, 21, 24, 41, 48, and bonus 31. As a result, they’re each $2.5 million richer after splitting the $5 million prize. According to PlayNow, one winning ticket was sold in Western Canada, and Atlantic Lottery states that the other ticket was sold in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Three people also split the second prize after matching five of the six winning numbers and the bonus number. Two tickets were sold in Ontario and one was sold in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The third prize will be split between 111 lottery players, who’ll each receive $1,009.

No one won the Classic Draw Extra prize worth $500,000 or the Encore prize worth $1 million.

It’s been several months since someone won the Lotto 6/49 jackpot.

During the October 9 Lotto 6/49 draw, six strangers from Quebec split the staggering $32 million Gold Ball jackpot.

Each person bought a Formule Groupe ticket, which allows you to purchase one or more shares in a group formed by a retailer. This one was sold in five shares and will be split between the six players, each getting $6.4 million. Read the full story here.

The next draw will take place on Wednesday, December 25, and the Gold Ball prize is worth $52 million.
