“Hazardous” winter storm with heavy snow and freezing rain aimed at Sea to Sky

Just days after strong winds slammed Vancouver and caused a landslide blocking the Sea to Sky Highway, another huge storm aimed at the region could cause even more damage.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has upgraded a snowfall warning for Sea to Sky – Squamish to Whistler to a winter storm warning starting today.

The federal department warned that “hazardous winter conditions are expected” and urged travellers to use caution on the roads.

“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations,” said ECCC in the weather alert. “Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”

Residents and commuters can expect up to 30 cm of snow and a risk of freezing rain beginning today and stretching into early Wednesday morning.

This winter storm warning is due to a moisture-laden Pacific frontal system that will bring heavy snow to the Sea to Sky Highway and surrounding areas.

ECCC also advised residents and commuters to consider postponing non-essential travel until weather and road conditions improve.

The latest storm to hit the region comes after the recent wind storm that caused power outages, ferry cancellations, and the death of a person after a landslide engulfed their home along the Sea to Sky Highway.

The mudslide happened Saturday morning and closed the highway for nearly 24 hours. Folks on the road had to turn back to Squamish or Whistler, where hotel rooms quickly filled up. Drivers asked the community for spare rooms or couches, while others spent the night at a Whistler hotel.
