Update 1 pm July 2, 2024: Grouse Mountain has reopened following maintenance and testing.
Grouse Mountain remained closed on Tuesday due to persistent troubles with its tram system that began on the long weekend.
On Tuesday, the mountain posted an update to social media, saying its chalet and Skyride would remain closed for gondola maintenance on July 2.
“The status of this closure is day-to-day,” it said. “We apologize for the inconvenience this causes and look forward to welcoming you back another day.”
The mechanical issues began on Sunday, when some people decided to hike down the mountain and ended up getting injured.
Dwayne Derban with District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services said the initial call came about someone twisting their ankle, but as the day went on more injury calls came in — including one individual who was having a “fairly severe medical response.”
“People started to walk down these trails that are usually for the very adventurous, and were overwhelmed by fatigue,” Derban said.
Firefighters called in North Shore Rescue for help, and everyone was able to get down the mountain safely. Derban reminded folks thinking of walking down that the trails are strenuous — involving about 850 metres of elevation.
The Grouse Grind remains open Tuesday, but it’s a one-way trail and hikers should use the BCMC route to go back down the mountain.
Tickets to be honoured through September
People who purchased tickets for July 2 will have them honoured up to 90 days from now, Grouse Mountain said on social media.

The closure comes after Grouse Mountain’s original blue tram made its last journey up the mountain in June, after being in operation since 1966.
