Genie Bouchard suffers eye injury from pickleball accident

As a professional tennis and pickleball player, Genie Bouchard knows how to keep her eye on the ball.

However, a freak accident during practice gave her a scare she won’t forget.

On Thursday, the 30-year-old revealed that she suffered a scratched cornea after her eye was injured by a fragment of plastic from her partner’s pickleball paddle.

“Got hit in the eye with a pickleball during training today,” she shared in an X post. “It was a shank off my partner’s paddle straight into the eye. Went to urgent care and have a scratched cornea.”

Bouchard’s post featured one photo of her injured eye and another of her wearing an eyepatch.

Luckily, she is expected to make a full recovery and return to the court soon.

“The things we do for this sport! Will be healed in a matter of days,” the Montreal native added optimistically.

Meanwhile, fans in the replies are urging her to start wearing safety goggles during training sessions and matches.

“Ouch! Time to wear some safety glasses,” one X user wrote.

Another argued that all athletes should adopt them and that Bouchard “dodged a bullet.”

There were also plenty of lighthearted comments comparing the former Wimbledon finalist’s current look to a pirate.

“Captain Genie,” one user coined.

Considering Bouchard’s love of Halloween costumes (she rocked four this year), she might want to throw that eyepatch in the costume chest and save it for next year.
