Driver in hospital, watchdog called in after police-involved crash in the Fraser Valley

The BC Independent Investigations Office (BC IIO) has been notified of a police-involved crash that sent two officers to the hospital and required a civilian driver to be airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to the Abbotsford Police Department, the crash occurred at the intersection of King Road and Gladwin Road just after 4 p.m. on Feb. 20.

Abbotsford Police says that a vehicle occupied by two officers was proceeding down King Road, and as it approached that intersection, a collision occurred with a civilian vehicle.

Following the crash, the civilian driver needed to be transported to a B.C. hospital via air ambulance, and the Abbotsford Police officers were transported to hospital by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Impairment is being considered as a factor in this collision,” Abbotsford Police said in a statement.

Based on a Google Street View look at the Abbotsford intersection, the area where the crash took place is a secluded area with land used for agricultural purposes.

Currently, the investigation is in its early stages, being led by members of the Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit. It is being supported by additional Abbotsford Police officers and the Integrated Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Service (ICARS).

King Street, between Columbia and Jackson Streets, was closed for some time as officers gathered evidence at the scene.

Abbotsford Police asks anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dash cam footage to contact them at 604-859-5225, quoting file number 2025-7251.

We have contacted the BC IIO for more information about this incident.
