It seems Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary has united Canadians across the political divide after his response to Donald Trump’s suggestion that Canada become the 51st state.
The Canadian businessman recently made several appearances on Fox News, stating that he wants to talk with the US president-elect about “combining the two economies and erasing the border” between Canada and the US.
“Nobody wants Trudeau to negotiate this deal. I don’t want him doing it for me, so I’m going to go to Mar-a-Lago. I’ll start the narrative,” he posted on X last week.
There’s 41 million Canadians sitting on the world’s largest amounts of all resources, including the most important, energy and water. Canadians over the holidays have been talking about this. They want to hear more. What this could be is the beginning of an economic union. Think… pic.twitter.com/yp5PuLgxZJ

In an interview posted to the Conservative news channel’s YouTube on Saturday, O’Leary said he’s interested in an “economic union” between the two countries.
“It makes sense because the resources Canada have, the US needs, particularly power and water,” he said.
The reality TV personality added that putting the two countries together would be make “the most powerful country on Earth.”
“You don’t have to sell the country, don’t have to even merge it, but you can create a union where you put together the things that matter: A common currency, a common passport, free flowing trade across the border, particularly in energy,” he told Fox News.
Canadians seemed to come together on social media, calling out O’Leary for being “ridiculous.”
Kevin O’Leary is just pole dancing for Trump. Wants attention. Canadians think he is ridiculous.
He also knows our economies are already merged and have been for decades. Putting tariffs on Canada are like blowing holes in your own canoe.

“Kevin O’Leary is a selfish, self-centered, ego-maniacal Donkey, who has zero authority to speak on behalf of Canada,” added another X user.

One X user stressed that the businessman does not represent Canadians in any way.
“I can’t believe it needs to be said, but people like Elon Musk and Kevin O’Leary don’t live in the same world you do,” reads the post. “They don’t live the same life, have the same needs, and absolutely don’t represent you in anyway whatsoever. They represent themselves. Don’t listen to them. Ever”

Another X user joked that O’Leary is “pitching Canada to be the 51st state like we are an episode of Shark Tank 😂.”

Even his former Dragon’s Den co-star Arlene Dickinson dragged his comments.
“His recent comments suggesting that Canada should sell out and align itself as an extension of the United States are painfully misguided—they’re a calculated and all-too-typical move to serve his own interests, not the country’s,” she shared in a recent post on LinkedIn.
While the online consensus seems to be against the former Dragon’s Den investor, some Canadians are open to discussing it.
Tax cuts and free speech?
