Busy BC highway shutdown during rush hour leads to lengthy delays

Police are urging motorists to avoid Highway 17 completely Monday afternoon following a crash. It’s expected to take some time to clear.

That’s the message from Delta Police Traffic Unit, which shared on X that the driver in the single-vehicle crash was thankfully unhurt, but the damage to their semi-truck and the roadway is extensive.

It appears that a portion of the trailer is across a median and down a slight embankment off the roadway, and the remainder of the truck is stretched across several lanes of traffic in the westbound lanes near Tilbury and 80th Street.

While that prevents motorists from travelling west through the stretch, eastbound traffic is also slow, police said, urging everyone to avoid the area completely.

“This will take some time to clear,” Delta Police Traffic Unit wrote.

“Hwy 17 westbound is closed at the Nordel Connector. All westbound traffic is being diverted onto the Nordel Connector. Westbound Nordel Connector traffic is being redirected to eastbound Hwy 17. This will likely be a few hours before truck removal is complete,” it added.

More to come…
