A woman under the influence of alcohol was seriously injured by BC RCMP officers who were trying to de-escalate what appeared to be a tense situation.
According to a release from the BC RCMP, the incident occurred in Chilliwack and was reported to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC).
The incident took place on November 22 at around 2:30 am and involved an impaired woman who refused to comply with some directions from staff at a restaurant.
The release from the BC RCMP states that staff from the unnamed restaurant called the police to report that an impaired woman wouldn’t take a cab and had also entered her vehicle.
When officers attended the scene, they located the vehicle running with the impaired woman in the employee’s driver seat. The impaired woman eventually exited the vehicle and then tried to get back in. When officers attempted to stop her, the situation escalated, resulting in her being taken into custody.
BC Emergency Health Services attended the scene and transported the woman to hospital, and it was determined that she had been inflicted with a serious injury.
A release from the BC RCMP suggests that the IIO BC is investigating RCMP actions that led up to the woman being injured.
“As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police. Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation by the IIO BC.”
