BC premier says response to Trump tariffs paused, for now

The situation regarding US President Donald Trump’s controversial tariffs has been fluid and ever-changing, and BC Premier David Eby has issued another statement in response to recent revelations saying retaliatory directives would be paused.

Eby held a press conference in Vancouver at 4:30 on Monday afternoon to discuss the latest tariff news. This was hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced some developments in talks with the president, including a 30-day pause of the tariffs.

Eby has been talking tough on tariffs, which was no different at today’s conference. Eby thanked Trudeau and Trump for coming together to find this temporary solution.

While Eby wants to say mission accomplished, he said the tariff reality has changed the relationship between the two regions for the “foreseeable future” and that there’s still work to do.

The BC premier said that all directives he suggested regarding the tariffs will be paused for now.

“That doesn’t mean that we will abandon preparation.”

One of the directives announced by Eby this weekend was for BC Liquor Distribution branches to stop purchasing American liquor from red states and remove the top-selling “red-state” brands from the shelves of public liquor stores.

At Monday’s conference, Eby said the province would still be ready if Trump said tomorrow that the tariffs would be back on. But for now, US liquor is back on the shelves, and all other directives are paused.

“We won’t back down or be bullied into becoming another state,” said Eby this weekend.  “Our province is unified and resolute. We’ll never stop standing up for BC and Canada.”

The premier also had the spotlight on him in America, making an appearance on Fox News.

“We will be watching very carefully,” Eby concluded.
