BC “evaluating” tsunami risk after strong earthquake near California

BC’s Ministry of Emergency Preparedness is evaluating safety risk to the province after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of California Thursday morning.

“Officials are evaluating the data to determine if there is any threat to BC. Updates will be shared as soon as they become available,” it said.

Parts of the province, including western Vancouver Island, are known to be at tsunami risk for powerful quakes that strike in the Pacific.

The earthquake struck off the coast of Eureka, California with a magnitude of 7.3, according to the US National Tsunami Warning Centre. Tsunami warnings have been issued for northern California and southern Oregon.
