Put on your warmest mittens and your comfiest parkas because you’re invited to a huge campus-wide snowball fight at the University of British Columbia today.
The Calendar UBC, a students-for-students social enterprise and event-planning organization, is hosting the event, which kicks off this morning at 11:30 am.
Oliver Quezada, External Relations Coordinator of The Calendar UBC, told Daily Hive that the purpose of the event is to bring people together.
“These events provide an opportunity to unify and build the community during the cold and stressful times at the beginning of the winter school term,” said Quezada. “It’s also a great way to make some new and long-lasting friendships.”
The first UBC campus-wide snowball fight took place in 2016. It returned in 2024 after a three-year hiatus with 600 participants packing and throwing snowballs in good fun.
“This event is popular due to the joy and happiness it spreads to the UBC community when Vancouver is hit with a snow day,” Quezada added. “It’s a fun way to bring out everyone’s youthful energy.”
“All UBC community members are encouraged to participate in this event. The event lasts around one hour and the rules include having fun and encouraging respectful play.”
The Calendar UBC is currently prepping for its Annual Valentine’s Day Party (Love Drunk) this Saturday and its Annual St. Patty’s Day Bar Crawl in March.
On Sunday night, UBC announced a closure for all in-person classes on Monday. UBC’s website states that the campus is still open, but it has cancelled in-person learning out of an abundance of caution.
Vancouver’s first blast of winter weather will continue throughout the week, with temperatures dipping well below freezing in the region.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued its latest weather forecast for Vancouver, including periods of flurries throughout Monday and Tuesday and a wind chill that is sending temperatures plummeting.
