Residents of Alberta seem to be the most open to the concept of Canada joining the United States, an idea President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly mentioned over the past couple of months.
A new Angus Reid Institute poll suggests that if there was a referendum in Canada, and Canadians were to vote on whether this country should become part of the United States, 10% of Canadians replied they would agree to join.
Alberta leads Canada in support of joining the United States, with 18% of respondents saying yes.
Why is Alberta leading the nation in wanting to join the United States?
The public opinion research foundation added that some Albertans have harboured separatist feelings in the past, pointing to a poll back in 2019 that revealed 60% of Albertans said they would be in favour of their province joining a separatist movement.
More recently, in 2024, another Angus Reid poll showed that nearly half (47%) of Albertans believed their province gets a “raw deal” when it comes to being part of Canada.
Saskatchewan is behind Alberta in support of Canada joining the US at 15%, followed by Manitoba and Quebec at 12% and 11%, respectively.
When it came to asking Canadians if they believe Trump is serious when he makes statements about Canada joining the US as the 51st state, half (52%) of Canadians believe Trump is trolling their country. On the other hand, one-third (32%) disagree and believe Trump is serious.
Atlantic Canada led the country in believing Trump is serious at 36%, followed by Quebec and Alberta at 35% and 32%, respectively.
This isn’t the first piece of data to reveal that some in Alberta have eyed up potentially linking up with the US, with a Leger poll released last month coming to a similar conclusion.
Trump is also anticipated to visit Alberta this summer when prominent world leaders will gather in the province for the 51st G7 summit.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is also fresh off a visit with Trump after chatting with him at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend.
