YVR to hold airport-wide emergency training Wednesday

If you have a flight out of the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Wednesday, you may notice an unusual number of emergency crew members at the airport, but it’s nothing to worry about.

YVR says it’s hosting an emergency training exercise so crews are prepared in the event of an aircraft incident.

The airport says nearly 200 people from local, regional, provincial, and federal organizations will be involved.

“YVR’s airfield as well as facilities around the airport will be used to practice emergency response plans with airlines, multiple aviation and related agencies, health authorities, emergency services, and municipalities,” it said.

Travellers are advised to expect “increased activity” around the airport. But YVR says you’ll be able to identify participants in the exercises by YVR baseball caps, nametags, or vests.

If you see smoke and emergency vehicles visible around Sea Island — specifically along Miller Road, the airport says that’s also likely part of the tests.

YRV says regular testing of its Emergency Management Plan and the training of response personnel are integral to its preparedness for emergencies, adding that regular airport operations on Wednesday will not be affected.
