Woman hit by rock while driving on Highway 1 has died, police confirm

The woman who was hit by a “volleyball-sized rock” that flew through the windshield of her car while driving on Highway 1 in Burnaby has died, police confirmed Wednesday.

The BC Highway Patrol explained the victim was a 34-year-old woman.

The incident happened last Thursday when the rock went flying through the windshield of a white sedan, striking the woman, before blowing out the back window.

Images of the vehicle from the scene showed a large hole through the front glass, as bystanders stood around the white sedan. The back window of the sedan was seen completely shattered.

Corp. Melissa Jongema says the investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and collision analysts are still trying to understand what happened. Last week, the RCMP said it believed the rock came from a passing vehicle.

“The file is still open and under investigation. When a file is open, criminal charges may be considered if there is evidence of a criminal offence. It is too early to determine that,” Jongema said Tuesday.
