Wildfire on Vancouver Island reaches 1 hectare overnight

Firefighters are battling an out-of-control blaze that was discovered on Vancouver Island Sunday night.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the fire, near Port Alberni, was first reported to its hotline around 8 p.m.

Kimberly Kelly, an information officer with the Coastal Fire Centre, tells 1130 NewsRadio that it’s reached just over one hectare in size, but so far isn’t threatening any settlements.

“It is in a remote location, so it’s about 11 kilometres southwest of Coombs in a cutblock. So it’s far down a logging road. Good news for us, though, there is road access,” said Kelly.

She says the service has two initial attack crews and a unit crew that are responding to the fire, adding they are being supported by Mosaic Forestry water tenders and personnel.

The BCWS believes the fire was human caused, and Kelly says it’s a reminder to British Columbians that fire season isn’t over yet.

“It is important for people to know that even with these cooler weather temperatures, that there is still the possibility to ignite a wildfire and for it to spread.”

She encourages you to visit the BCWS website for up to date fire regulations and safe practice information.

There are currently 190 active wildfires burning in B.C., of which 23 are considered out of control.
