White Rock to vote on pier accessibility funding

People who use wheelchairs may soon get access to one of the most iconic and popular landmarks in Metro Vancouver.

After months of back and forth, White Rock city council will vote on spending money for a special mat that will give wheelchair users and others with accessibility challenges the ability to go on the pier.

In essence, the mat will smooth out the uneven nature of the planks. If the plan is approved on Monday night, council will use money from a number of grants.

The latest vote comes after city council approved to accelerate the accessibility project last month.

Despite council initially saying the mat would have to wait until 2025, council fast-tracked the approval on June 10, with Coun. Christopher Trevelyan explaining that the city received a $25,000 grant to move forward with the project.

In total, the mat, which will stretch along the pier, is expected to cost about $115,000.
