Walmart bakery death not suspicious, Halifax police say

Halifax Regional Police say no evidence of foul play has been found in the investigation into the death of a woman in a Walmart bakery.

A 19-year-old woman who was an employee at the store was found dead in a large walk-in oven at the Walmart location on Mumford Road on the night of October 19.

“The police investigation determined the death is not suspicious and there is no evidence of foul play,” police wrote in a media release.

Officials said investigators have met with the family to update them and share condolences.

“The family asks the public to respect their privacy and the dignity and memory of their loved one, as they receive this news,” said the release.

The Walmart location has since reopened after being closed for several weeks.

GoFundMe page was set up for the young woman Organized by the Maritime Sikh Society Executive. It named Gursimran Kaur as the woman who died.

According to the GoFundMe, Kaur’s mother also worked at the Walmart store. Both mother-daughter had worked there for the last two years after they came to Canada with “big dreams.”

“Imagine the horror that her mother experienced who herself opened the oven, when someone pointed out to it,” the GoFundMe reads.
