A Vancouver police officer has completed a 7,000-kilometre bike ride from Vancouver to Halifax to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Sgt. Dayne Campbell started his ride in May and spent the next 53 days cycling to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes, a program that allows children with cancer to experience summer camp while receiving medical care.
Campbell has been participating in the Cops for Cancer program for 15 years, but the cause became personal for him in 2023 after his daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
“For the last eight months or so, my family, myself, especially my daughter, has had a number of challenges and she’s doing well now,” Campbell told CityNews in May before he started his journey.
“For some reason I thought over the years that maybe I had built up enough mojo over the years so another woman in my family wouldn’t get cancer. I realize that’s not the way the cancer works, but she’s doing good.”
Since he began riding with the program, it is estimated that Campbell has raised over $140,000 for pediatric cancer research.
