Video, witnesses sought after first responders attacked in Coquitlam incident : RCMP

The Coquitlam RCMP is looking for witnesses after after a man attempted to harm first responders at the site of a medical emergency last month.

Mounties say they were called around 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, to assist paramedics and firefighters in the area of Westwood Street and Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam,

It’s there that police say a man “brandished a weapon” in an attempt to harm emergency personnel.

Police say the suspect ran east on Lougheed Highway into Port Coquitlam when they arrived. They later found the man near Patricia Avenue and Hastings Street and arrested him.

“We understand that the heavy police presence in the area … caused concern with local residents,” said Media Relations Officer Corp. Alexa Hodgins.

She tells CityNews that two police officers “sustained minor injuries” during the pursuit on foot.

Hodgins says investigators are now looking for video of the suspect from the chase.

“Coquitlam RCMP is asking anyone who may have witnessed a person on their property without permission between 9:50 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to contact police. Investigators are also seeking video surveillance in the area north of Lougheed Highway between Clayton Street and Hastings Street to Patricia Avenue in Port Coquitlam,” Hodgins said.

The man is described as being in his 30s, 5’10”, with a slim build, and blond hair. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing a blue jacket, black jeans, and a black shirt, but police say they believe he may have dropped items of clothing during the chase.
