Vancouver police search for convicted killer who left halfway house

Vancouver police are asking the public for help in finding a man who failed to return to his halfway house this week.

The VPD says Elwood Poorman “has a history of committing violent offences.”

According to police, the 42-year-old signed out of his halfway house on Tuesday, July 16, and never returned as is required by his court-ordered conditions.

Poorman pleaded guilty in 2020 to manslaughter in the 2018 death of a man in Port Coquitlam. He was arrested days after the death of Jonathon Shingoose, who was found seriously hurt and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The VPD says Poorman is described as being 5’10” tall and weighing 220 pounds. He has short black hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo on his left forearm of a tiger and praying hands, and a tattoo of a cross with a rose on his left shoulder.

Police are asking anyone who sees Poorman or knows where he is to call 911 right away.
