Vancouver Park Board to vote on FIFA training facilities, looper moth tree felling

World Cup soccer and dead or damaged trees will be the focus at Monday’s Vancouver Park Board meeting.

Commissioners will be considering a $16 million project to create temporary FIFA World Cup training facilities at Killarney and Memorial South parks ahead of the 2026 competition.

Work would start in January 2025 if approved by the Park Board.

The Vancouver Tennis Society is opposed to it, saying much of Memorial South would be closed for almost two years, blocking access to amenities like the running track, cricket pitch, and playground.

The Park Board is also expected to approve the third and final stage of looper moth mitigation and restoration work in Stanley Park on Monday.

The work has been ongoing since 2023, with thousands of dead or damaged trees being removed.

If approved, this latest stage would start in April.
