Vancouver gas prices jump ahead of holidays

Gas prices in Metro Vancouver have risen ahead of the holidays, with the average cost for a litre of regular gas sitting at $1.71 on Sunday.

GasBuddy.com says that while the region has seen a rise, the national average hasn’t moved at all in the last week.

“Including the change in gas prices in Vancouver during the past week, prices yesterday were 3.8 c/L higher than the same day one year ago and are 5.9 c/L lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 2.9 c/L during the last month and stands 6.9 c/L higher than this day one year ago,” the gas price website explained on Monday.

Abbotsford saw a jump of 4.9 c/L this week, while Victoria saw essentially no change. Meanwhile, the average price across B.C. sat at $1.64, up 3.1 c/L from last week which came in at $1.61,

“We’ve seen a mostly stable week for gas prices as millions of motorists prepare to travel for Christmas,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“With oil prices continuing to move sideways, gas prices are likely to hold near current levels in the coming week. However, we are closely monitoring volatility as geopolitical tensions and potential changes in U.S. trade policy could impact future prices. As families travel for the holidays, this volatility at the pump is a timely reminder to check prices before filling up to save as much as 5 to 15 cents per litre — a trend that will likely persist into 2025.”

According to GasBuddy, on Dec. 23, 2020, gas prices were sitting at $1.24 per litre of regular, while it was $1.64 on the same day in 2022.
