Surrey’s famed 1001 Steps to be reconstructed

The iconic 1001 Steps stairway at Ocean Park is getting a revamp after Surrey city council approved the capital project.

City councillors passed a motion on Monday night to remove the old stair system and build another.

The city says the original was built in the late 1980s and has now reached the end of its lifecycle.

“The project will include the removal and disposition of the existing stair/landing structure and the construction of a new stair system including new foundations,” the city said in a statement Tuesday.

A $724,500 contract for the project was awarded to Calta Construction Inc., with funding to come from the 2024 Parks, Recreation & Culture Capital Budget.

“This renovation will not only enhance the safety and accessibility of the 1001 Steps but will also preserve this beloved community landmark for future generations to enjoy,” said Mayor Brenda Locke.

She says the city has approved $ 1.7 billion in capital projects over five years.

The city says the project will start in late October, with completion scheduled for the end of March 2025.
