Surrey RCMP arrests 20-year-old car theft suspect

The Surrey RCMP has arrested a 20-year-old man on several charges relating to a vehicle theft last week.

Mounties say they responded to a call around 6 p.m. about a stolen vehicle on Tuesday, June 11.

The Surrey RCMP Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) says it found the vehicle and driver, stopped him once, and lost him before tracking him from Surrey into Richmond.

“SGET officers initially located both the vehicle and driver stopped in Surrey, and as officers gave arrest commands, the driver reportedly fled in the vehicle,” said the RCMP in a release Monday.

Police say the driver was arrested near where the vehicle was abandoned in Richmond, with the help of the Vancouver Police Department Gang Crime Unit.

“This was a multi-jurisdictional incident and highlights the coordination and collaboration of partner agencies to apprehend this individual,” said Cpl. James Mason of the Surrey RCMP.

The driver was identified as 20-year-old Gurjot Singh Bhatti.

Police say Bhatti has been charged with possession of stolen property valued over $5,000, fleeing from police, and driving while disqualified.

He reportedly remains in custody until his next appearance in court.
